Ranna is the first of the Nine Bright Shiners. In The Beginning, Ranna became part of the Charter. As a bell, Ranna is the Sleeper, who brings sleep to those who hear it. It was wielded by Touchstone at the binding of Orannis.

Ranna has a sweet, low, and lazy sound; a muffled sleepy peal that carries the sensations of falling asleep.[1]

- Sabriel uses Ranna while in death retrieving Touchstone's spirit.[2]
- Sabriel uses Ranna to quell a Mordaut hiding among villagers who have taken refuge from the dead on an island.[3]
- Rung by Sabriel after binding Kerrigor with Mogget's collar.[4]
Trivia[]
- Ranna was used to bind Mogget at the end of Sabriel, as Saraneth had been destroyed by Kerrigor.
- Wearing Charter-spelled protective garments and armor can help to fight off Ranna's effects, as seen when it was used by an enemy necromancer in Goldenhand.
- Mogget claims Ranna holds Kerrigor "more tightly than she holds me," implying her original form was female.
- Ranna is one of three bells Idrach forges in Death.
