The Royal Bloodline is one of the three Charter bloodlines. They are responsible for the ruling of the Kingdom and also the wardenship of the Great Charter Stones.

It is infamous for berserks, who appear most often in the Royal bloodline by far (e.g. Touchstone).

The royal bloodline also often produces alluring leaders, with thousands of followers eager to pledge their fealty and join whatever cause(s) the Royal is crusading for. As the Disreputable Dog said:

"... Kerrigor's power lay in his followers. His art was to draw upon them, and his downfall was to depend on it."

"What do you mean?" asked Lirael. "I thought he was a Free Magic sorcerer who became one of the Greater Dead?"

"He was more than that," said the Dog. "For he had the royal blood. Mastery of others ran deep in him. Somewhere in Death, Kerrigor found the means to use the strength of those who swore allegiance to him ... If Sabriel had not accidentally used a most ancient charm that severed him from this power, I think Kerrigor would have triumphed. For a time, at least."[1]

This effortless collection of enthusiastic followers and the Fury are the two Royal traits that manifest most often.

Members[]

The following characters are Royal or part Royal and have been named.

  • Queen Hellael II
    • Ruled prior to the era depicted Clariel, assisted in the founding of the Greenwash Bridge Company.
    • The Greenwash Bridge Company was founded 87 years prior to the events of To Hold the Bridge.
    • The bridge construction is unfinished and ongoing during the events of Clariel as well, which places these two stories in roughly the same era.
    • As of the events of Goldenhand, the bridge construction is complete. The Greenwash Bridge Company still exists to defend the bridge.
  • King Orrikan III
    • Ruled about 600 years before the events of Sabriel, during the era depicted in Clariel.
    • During the events of To Hold the Bridge, the current ruler is mentioned to be a King and a "powerful charter mage". This coincides with King Orrikan's description during Clariel, and the time period fits, but there is no confirmation of this King's identity.
  • Princess Tathiel
    • The granddaughter and heir of King Orrikan III.
  • Queen (unnamed)
    • Ruled about 200 years before the events of Sabriel. Her rule ended as the Interregnum began.

Trivia/Theories[]

  • Many fans believe Dyrim gave itself to the Royal bloodline, as diplomacy is so important to their position and their ability to obtain loyal followers is unmatched.
  • There is a theory that the power inherent in each Great Bloodine is of the same strength regardless of the number of the Blood. For example, the power of the numerous Clayr is distributed among them all, making each individual Clayr relatively weak in their ability, i.e. the Sight. As Kerrigor was the only member of the Royal line left besides Touchstone (and the latter was in suspended animation), that would help explain how extraordinarily powerful Kerrigor was at gaining followers.
