This page is about the character Sabriel. For the book, see Sabriel.

Sabriel (b. ~ 1892 A.W.) is one of the protagonists of the Old Kingdom series, and the primary protagonist in Sabriel. Her mother Elinor Hallett died shortly after childbirth. Her father is Abhorsen Terciel, who rescued her from the the Greater Dead Kerrigor in Death. Wishing to keep his daughter safe from threats within the Old Kingdom, Terciel sent Sabriel to live in Ancelstierre when she was young, where she attended Wyverley College.

In Sabriel[]

Shortly before Sabriel is to graduate from Wyverley College, her father delivers his sword and bells to her through a Dead servant. Sabriel takes this to mean he is trapped in Death and returns to the Old Kingdom to save him, but quickly realizes that she does not know nearly enough about Charter Magic or the dangerous Old Kingdom itself. After a stop at Cloven Crest where she gets directions to Abhorsen's House from a remnant of her mother, she finds herself targeted by a Mordicant. She is pursued nonstop to Abhorsen's House, where she meets Mogget.

The house is besieged by the Dead at Kerrigor's command. In order to escape, she calls for the "gift of water" from the Clayr, i.e. a tremendous flood of the Ratterlin. Sabriel and Mogget escape in a Paperwing. After being chased by gore crows, the Paperwing crashes and Sabriel finds herself in Holehallow, the graveyard of the royal house, where she has a brief, terrifying episode with a freed Mogget, but she manages to rebind him. Sabriel finds Touchstone imprisoned as a wooden figurehead and frees him, unaware of his identity or importance. They continue to Belisaere to save the Abhorsen.

Kisstolton

"You saved my life." Touchstone and Sabriel in the aftermath of Astarael and their (bloody) first kiss. By Laura Tolton.

They find him among the Great Charter Stones, but their diamond of protection becomes surrounded by Kerrigor and his minions. Sabriel manages to rescue her father from Death, but he can only live briefly and tells her she must succeed him. He unbinds Mogget and uses the last bell Astarael to send himself, Kerrigor, and Kerrigor's followers far into Death. Sabriel prevents Touchstone's spirit from slipping into Death by kissing him.

Following the clairvoyant guidance of the Clayr twins Sanar and Ryelle, Sabriel and Touchstone use another Paperwing to reach the Wall and Wyverley, where Kerrigor's body is hidden. Before they can perform the last rites, Kerrigor and the unbound Mogget storm the school and battle for the right to kill Sabriel. Kerrigor seems to consume Mogget, and a mortally wounded Sabriel finally defeats Kerrigor by binding him with her ring and the bell Ranna.

Sabriel dies, but the previous Abhorsens prevent her from the Final Death, as she is the last of their line and cannot die without another to take her place. She wakes up with Touchstone before her, and both Mogget and Kerrigor asleep in cat form, bound by Ranna the Sleeper.

In Lirael[]

Nineteen years after the binding of Kerrigor, Sabriel is married to King Touchstone. She has two children: Princess Ellimere, who will succeed her father as the ruling monarch, and Prince Sameth, the reluctant Abhorsen-in-Waiting.

Sabriel slays Chlorr of the Mask and banishes her spirit. However, somehow Chlorr is able to return as one of the Greater Dead.

In Abhorsen[]

Sabriel and King Touchstone travel to Ancelstierre to stop the slaughter of refugees forced into the Old Kingdom, but themselves become victims of an assassination attempt and barely escape.

Later, Sabriel arrives for the second binding of Orannis, where she discovers the existence of her half-sister Lirael. During the binding, Sabriel stands for Saraneth.

In Goldenhand[]

Sabriel learns that Chlorr of the Mask is amassing an overwhelming host to invade The Old Kingdom, and locates Chlorr's original body in the Empty Lands. She fights in the Battle of Greenwash Bridge alongside Touchstone, and both survive.
