Sameth, often shortened to Sam, (b. ~ January/February 1912 AW) [1] is a prince of the Old Kingdom. His father, Touchstone, is the King, while his mother is the Abhorsen. His sister Ellimere is heir to the throne.

He is initially assumed to be the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, but has little interest in or affinity for the position; he much prefers creating gadgets imbued with Charter Magic in his workshop (foreshadowing the fact that he is a long-extinct Wallmaker).

Though he tries to train as the Abhorsen-In-Waiting, he is reluctant and afraid of Death, and is tremendously relieved when it is discovered at the end of Lirael that Lirael is his aunt and true heir to the Abhorsen position.

Sam

Sameth uses his Wallmaker talents to reforge Nehima with the seven panpipes and the blood of the Five.

Sam is a particularly powerful Charter mage, especially when it comes to imbuing physical objects with spells, evidence of his Wallmaker skills. He becomes a close companion of his aunt Lirael in their quest to save Nick, as well as later when they attempt (unsuccessfully) to prevent Orannis from being unbound.

At the second binding of Orannis, Sam stands for Belgaer[2] and forges a powerful sword for Lirael to use in their attempt. When all seems lost, he is the one to free Mogget[3], with whom he has a strange and unique friendship. This ultimately proves to be the deciding factor in their victory.

In Goldenhand, Sam has created the titular new hand for Lirael out of Charter Magic. Later, he works to Charter-spell weapons and prepare for The Battle of Greenwash Bridge. He witnesses the battle and the Old Kingdom's eventual triumph with Ferin, with whom he has a mutual attraction.

Trivia/ Theories[]

  • Sam's odd friendship with Mogget might be due to Sam being a Wallmaker, as Terciel thought Mogget had originally had some special connection to the Wallmakers.
  • On his journey with Lirael to save Nick, both have an "animal" companion: Sam is accompanied by the Free Magic cat Mogget and Lirael by the Disreputable Dog, a remnant of Kibeth.
