To Hold the Bridge is a short story that is part of the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. It was published in 2010 in the Anthology 'Legends of Australian Fantasy'. After having been only available in Australia for four years, the short story will be published internationally in June 2015 in a story collection of the same name.

Although the events take place in the Old Kingdom, the Abhorsen is not mentioned and he/she plays no role in this short story.

Plot Summary Edit


-tells the story of 20-year-old young man Morghan joining the Bridge Company

-Company builds a fortified trade bridge over the River Greenwash (the northern border of the Old Kingdom)

-the Company's full name is "The Worshipful Company of the Greenwash & Field Market Bridge"

-at the beginning of the story, the bridge is nearing completion after 87 years of work

-a king rules the kingdom, a powerful mage

-there are four Bridge Masters that control the bridge in quarter-yearly turns

-the current Winter Bridgemistress of the Greenwash Bridge Company is Amiel, a Clayr

-the Company was founded by Queen Hellael the Second

-since the Company is mentioned in Clariel and there is a king, the story probably takes place around the time of the novel, or before
